As Director of Career Development and Public Interest Programs at Western State College of Law, James Gilliam continues to champion service, advocacy, and inclusion both on and off campus. This Pride Month, James reflects on the importance of celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community. He also recognizes those whose courage helped advance equality and visibility for future generations.
“I’m so excited to celebrate Pride this month, and throughout the year, as we continue to honor the rich diversity of the LGBTQIA community, as well as our community’s vast accomplishments and impactful contributions to society,” James says. “Many brave individuals have stepped forward over time to advance our rights. And this is the perfect time to highlight some of them, like Edie Windsor and James Obergefell.”
In addition to supporting students and expanding public interest opportunities at Western State, James is currently finalizing a textbook on homeless advocacy, helping bring this important area of law to more law schools across the country. The work is especially meaningful given the disproportionate impact homelessness has on members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It reinforces James’s longstanding commitment to serving vulnerable populations through education and advocacy.
