Western State College of Law Professor Sandra Rierson was recently quoted in The Christian Science Monitor in an article examining renewed efforts to limit birthright citizenship and the constitutional questions surrounding them. Addressing what would be required to change the birthright citizenship provision of the 14th Amendment, Professor Rierson explained, “If you really want to rewrite the birthright citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, the best way is to rewrite” it. While she doesn’t endorse the change, she explains that such a change would require a constitutional amendment, not an executive order or even a federal statute. We congratulate Professor Rierson on sharing her constitutional law expertise with a national audience and contributing to the discussion surrounding this evolving legal issue.
