A Student-First Approach to Admissions

At Western State College of Law, success begins well before students start their classes. One of the first people prospective students meet is Moe Merheb, Director of Admissions Data and Outreach, whose guidance, transparency, and student-first mindset help future law students take one of the most important steps of their academic careers.

Recently promoted to a new role, Moe brings years of experience in higher education, a global perspective, and a real passion for helping students through the law school admissions process. His leadership, global experience, and Lebanese heritage are part of the perspective he brings to Western State, where he continues to make a strong impact on aspiring law students.

A Global Journey Rooted in Service

Moe didn’t initially know he wanted to work in higher education. He began his professional career at the Environmental Protection Agency in the United Arab Emirates, where he worked in public relations and community outreach. There, he helped educate the public about environmental stewardship, conservation, and sustainable practices.

Reflecting on that chapter, he realized the common thread was always people. “Over time, that passion for serving the community evolved into helping individuals achieve their academic and professional goals,” he shares. His journey eventually led him into higher education admissions, where he discovered a career that aligned perfectly with his strengths: connecting with people, building trust, and helping others build their futures.

His international background has given him a uniquely broad worldview. Born to a French mother and Lebanese father, Moe spent time living in France, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE before later moving to the United States. Throughout his career, he also traveled extensively for recruitment efforts across the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa, which exposed him to a wide range of cultures, languages, and perspectives. Those experiences shaped the inclusive mindset he brings to student outreach today.

“My background has helped me appreciate diversity and the importance of inclusive environments,” he says. “It also helps me connect with students from different backgrounds and understand the unique challenges they may face.” That ability to connect is about understanding people, their concerns, and their goals. It’s a skill that continues to define how Moe approaches admissions at Western State.

Rebuilding His Career

When Moe moved to the United States in 2016, he faced the challenge of rebuilding his entire career in a new country. Although he arrived with substantial experience, he understood that he was entering a new higher education system, which meant he’d have to start over in many ways. Because the systems and expectations were different, his previous experience didn’t automatically translate. “I had to prove myself all over again,” Moe says.

He returned to an admissions counselor role and began rebuilding his career, step by step. For nearly nine years, Moe served as an Associate Director, continuing to grow his expertise, refine his approach, and establish himself within a new system. “It took me nine years,” he shares, describing his journey to a Director role.

His recent promotion represents years of persistence and a willingness to keep moving forward, even when that meant he’d have to rebuild his path from the ground up. “This role represents a meaningful milestone in my career,” he says. That lived experience now shapes how he supports students. He understands what it means to navigate uncertainty, to question next steps, and to keep going anyway. That perspective is part of what makes him such an effective and empathetic leader in admissions.

Leading with Data, Strategy, and Human Connection

As Director of Admissions Data and Outreach, Moe brings together two complementary strengths: a systems-driven mindset and a people-centered approach. “My background helps me approach admissions in a strategic and analytical way,” he explains. “I rely on data and systems to identify trends, improve processes, and ensure we’re reaching and supporting students effectively.” But that’s only one side of how he works. The other is rooted in communication.

Moe’s academic and professional background is strongly rooted in public relations, a skill that shapes how he interacts with students every day. He focuses on listening carefully, understanding what students are really asking, and responding in a way that is clear, respectful, and supportive.

He understands that admissions is not just a transactional process, but also an emotional one. Students are often navigating their own uncertainty, pressure, and self-doubt. That’s why accessibility matters to him. “I focus on being transparent, accessible, and supportive,” Moe says. He makes sure students know they can reach out, ask questions, and receive honest answers. His combination of structure and empathy helps turn a difficult process into one that’s much more manageable.

What Motivates Him: Student Success

At the core of Moe’s work is a simple but powerful motivation: student success. “My students’ success is my motivation. I can see their success,” he says. That visibility is what makes the work meaningful. From the first conversation with a prospective student to the moment they enroll, and eventually graduate, Moe sees the full arc of their journey.

He also finds energy in the students themselves. “I’m always working with brilliant minds,” he says with a smile. His perspective comes from having a deep respect for the students he works with. He sees their potential early on and is motivated by the opportunity to help them take the next step toward their goals.

Guiding Students Through Every Step

Applying to law school can feel overwhelming, but Moe works to make the process clearer, more structured, and less intimidating. His advice to prospective students is practical and direct: “Prepare, prepare, prepare.” He encourages students to start early, gather materials ahead of time, and stay organized through the process. That includes reaching out for recommendation letters well in advance and taking the LSAT seriously with proper preparation and practice.

When it comes to personal statements, Moe encourages students to focus on authenticity rather than overthinking. “Don’t exaggerate. Just talk about yourself. Keep it simple and professional,” he says.

One of the most important and often overlooked parts of the application process, he notes, is the use of addendums. These short explanations can provide context for academic performance, LSAT attempts, or personal circumstances. Rather than being seen as a weakness, Moe views them as an opportunity. “Even if it’s just a few sentences, it’s great that you’re forward and honest,” he explains. This kind of insight is part of what makes his guidance so valuable to prospective students.

A Community That Works Together

Moe sees Western State as a collaborative environment where every department works together to ensure student success. He often describes the institution using a simple but memorable analogy. An institution, he explains, is like a bicycle: every part has to work together for it to move forward. Admissions, academics, student services, and faculty all contribute to the student experience. “If one department slacks off, something will not be successful,” he says. That interconnected approach is one of the things that sets Western State apart.

When asked to describe the school, Moe kept it simple: “Supportive, student-focused, and dedicated to preparing future legal professionals.” It’s a culture where students are supported, guided, and prepared for what comes next.

Honoring Heritage and Values

For Moe, Arab American Heritage Month is an opportunity to reflect on the values that have shaped him. “My heritage is a big part of who I am,” he says. “It represents resilience, community, and strong family values.” Those values are reflected in how he approaches both his personal and professional life. They influence how he builds relationships, how he supports students, and how he contributes to the Western State community.

Experiences like Moe’s bring valuable perspective to Western State, helping create an environment where students from all backgrounds can feel supported and understood.

A Multilingual Professional with Creative Passions

Outside of work, Moe’s life centers around family. He enjoys visiting relatives, where weekends often turn into mini getaways filled with barbecues and time together. He also enjoys gaming with his children and exploring new restaurants with his wife.

In his personal time, Moe is also deeply engaged in technology and creativity. He has a strong interest in graphic design, website development, and programming, working with tools like HTML, PHP, and JavaScript. He manages several personal websites, including one for a family educational institution in Lebanon that offers online courses.

Moe is also multilingual, speaking English, Arabic, and French, and brings a global perspective shaped by years of international experience. He continues to build on that by learning Russian, reflecting his ongoing curiosity and commitment to growth.

Looking Ahead

Moe Merheb sees Western State as a place where his values are reflected in the way the community supports students and one another. “I’m grateful to be part of an institution that truly values its students and community,” he says. That sense of gratitude is matched by his commitment to the work he does every day.

Through his leadership in admissions, his ability to connect with students from all backgrounds, and his focus on both strategy and support, Moe plays a critical role in shaping the student experience at Western State College of Law. And for the students he works with, that impact begins long before they ever step into a classroom.
