Building a Foundation of Service from Day One
Western State College of Law’s newest 1L students started their law school journey with two important milestones: giving back to the local community and taking their Oath of Professionalism. Last week, during 1L Welcome Week, students put together interactive literacy kits for elementary school children in Orange County. The project aims to promote reading and support educational equity. Last year’s 1Ls participated in a similar community project. The following day, they took their Oath of Professionalism, an important step for students beginning law school. With the oath, they pledge to uphold the values of integrity, civility, and ethical conduct. With these milestones, our 1Ls officially began their journeys as law students.
Making a Real Impact in Orange County
James Gilliam, Western State’s Director of Career Development and Public Service, kicked off the project discussing the importance of community service in law. He emphasized that giving back, a cornerstone of Western State, is an essential quality of a good lawyer. Gilliam noted that both the ABA and the California Bar encourage law students to complete 50 hours of service yearly. He also pointed out that Western State honors students who make a real impact through public service when they graduate.
With guidance from faculty and staff, the 1L students assembled literacy kits. They filled the kits with books, activity materials, and school supplies—all packed into brand-new drawstring bags. Each kit was designed to inspire a love of reading and equip children in under-resourced schools with the tools they need to succeed.
This community service project was made possible through the generous support of Everett Dorey LLP. Partner Silvia Schaffer joined the event to speak with students about the vital role lawyers play in strengthening their communities. She shared examples of the firm’s commitment to public service and its support of initiatives that promote equity, access to justice, and community well-being. Her remarks underscored how service work can have a lasting impact. Through community service, Western State students can carry that spirit of giving forward throughout their careers. Western State is grateful for Everett Dorey’s continued partnership in fostering meaningful outreach opportunities for our students.
Committing to the Values of the Profession
On Saturday, the incoming class reconvened for one of the most meaningful parts of starting the law school journey—the Oath of Professionalism. Surrounded by faculty, staff, and peers, students—led by Judge Craig Arthur (Class of 1988)—took part in the ceremony. They pledged to uphold the principles of integrity, civility, and ethical conduct as they embark on their legal education. The ceremony served as a reminder that the study of law goes beyond mastering the law. It is also about embracing the responsibilities and standards that define the profession. Family and friends warmly gathered to witness this special moment, capturing photos as the students proudly took their oaths.
Service and Integrity: Cornerstones of Western State
Western State College of Law, one of California’s most affordable law schools, stands out for combining academic excellence with a strong sense of community. By starting law school with both a public service project and the Oath of Professionalism, the incoming fall 2025 class has already embraced two defining aspects of the profession—service and ethical responsibility.
The teamwork and enthusiasm of the 1L students show the impact future legal professionals can have—on campus, in courtrooms, and in the communities they serve.
