BIOGRAPHY

Professor Elmakawi is joining the faculty in Fall 2026 and will teach Civil Procedure. Previously, Professor Elmakawi was the principal of the Law Office of Shireef Elmakawi, where he specialized in advanced estate planning, trust administration, and probate, and he taught at the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law and the University of Hawaiʻi Richardson School of Law. His teaching experience includes Wills and Trusts, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Advanced Legal Writing, Financial Basics for Lawyers, and Animal Law. Professor Elmakawi also spent several years in the financial services industry as a licensed SEC Investment Adviser Representative and FINRA Registered Representative.

Professor Elmakawi earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University, Northridge; a Juris Doctor with a concentration in Taxation Law from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (now UC Law San Francisco); and an LL.M. in Animal Law from Lewis & Clark Law School. His areas of scholarly research include animal welfare, succession law, and taxation.
