BIOGRAPHY

Professor Nicole Rangel is an international lawyer with over 15 years of experience advising on international criminal law, international human rights law, international humanitarian law, refugee law, and representing survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

She has litigated allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and terrorism on all sides of the aisle for numerous international criminal tribunals. Specifically, Professor Rangel worked at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon as well as for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. She has investigated alleged human rights violations and international crimes on five continents with an emphasis on post-conflict rule of law and accountability.

Professor Rangel has consulted for the United Nations, various international organizations, states, and rights holders. She has authored articles on international criminal law and continues to lecture on intersections of peace, justice, and accountability such as the case for Palestinian liberation, climate-based grounds of asylum, ecocide, and utility of open-source intelligence.

While Professor Rangel has lived and worked all over the globe, she remains committed to fostering the next generation of human rights advocates in her home state of California. In addition to her international legal and teaching career, Professor Rangel provides pro bono representation to traditionally marginalized communities including migrants, minorities, women, and others fleeing persecution. Professor Rangel graduated magna cum lade from McGeorge School of Law and holds a B.A. in Political Science and Global Peace & Security from University of California Santa Barbara.
