Prof. Cavanaugh is a member of the California and Illinois bars, and is a fully licensed certified public accountant, a registered patent attorney, and a licensed real estate broker.

He has worked as a computer programmer, a law firm associate, as in-house counsel at AirTouch Communications (also known as PacTel, Vodafone, and Verizon), and as general counsel of Sage Software (originally a publicly traded American accounting software company, then the U.S. subsidiary of one of the United Kingdom’s 100 largest corporations). Later he was senior counsel at Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld LLP, a major international law firm, and then chief financial officer of a telecommunications company based in Long Beach.

He has been adjunct faculty at the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Kent law school in Chicago, and at Whittier Law School. He served for over three years as elected governor of the State Bar of California, including over a year as the state bar’s vice president, treasurer, and member oversight chairperson.
