Public Services

The Western State community is committed to training attorneys who are passionate about their profession’s responsibility to the welfare of the community. Western State’s innovative Public Service Program provides a means to perform law related pro bono work that empowers you to use your developing legal skills to assist your community and its underserved members. Western State will recognize qualified service – at least forty hours of approved service performed before graduation – with a Certificate of Public Service. Routinely approved is service on behalf of a charitable organization or governmental entity, or work on a pro bono case for a private law firm. Students do not receive credit for work done for payment or academic credit, or volunteer work for an employer receiving a fee.

Assignments may include interviewing clients for the Public Defender’s Office, preparing documents for a pro bono class action, or assisting with a charitable clothing drive to name three examples. Assignments do not have to be law-related, but should evince a commitment to the underprivileged and the underserved, as well as an ethic of service. Applications may be obtained at Student Services.
